Description

Students will read and analyze 3 excerpts on the justification for absolutism (absolute monarchy) by answering 26 questions, completing an extension task, and analyzing a political cartoon. Students will also compare and contrast the excerpts and identify counter points. The excerpts are from King James I in 1598 and 1610 and from Thomas Hobbes 1651 (Leviathan). The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Inferring from the text, what sort of regard does King James hold Parliament in and why?
--What action could the king take if he sees a law as “doubtsome?”
--In what ways(s) could a subject of the crown be found blasphemous?
--Why is James’ reference to his ancestors relevant to his argument?
--Explain what the consent and covenant are. How are they connected to a Sovereign’s power/position?
--Under what circumstances could the form of government change?
--Which statement in which source do you think is the strongest for absolutism and why?
--Which statement in which source do you think is the weakest for absolutism and why?
