Description

Students will read and analyze two points of view on whether or not America needs a New Deal by answering 37 questions and completing a creative task (text excerpts are from FDR and Hoover in 1932). They will also analyze 6 images according to provided prompts. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why might “wild radicalism” have been a cause for concern in the immediate context of the speech?
--Rewrite the 3rd paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--For what reason(s) must Americans unite?
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym, or definition, for “specter of insecurity.”
--In what way does Hoover see the Democrats acting against Americans’ best interests?
--Explain Hoover’s reference to tyranny in the government.
--Inferring from the text, what qualities does Hoover value above most else?
--Where is Hoover’s assertion of “Rugged Individualism” most paralleled or referenced in the text?
--What is FDR’s strongest argument for the New Deal and why?
--What is Hoover’s weakest argument against the New Deal and why? What, if anything, could be added to that part of the text to bolster it?
--If you could re-title each of these texts what would you choose and why?
