Description

Students will read and analyze 5 excerpts and 8 images representing different points of view about the Monroe Doctrine by answering 30 questions. The excerpts are from Thomas Jefferson (2), John Quincy Adams, an American newspaper, and Prince Metternich of Austria. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub! See the preview for a closer look!

Sample questions include:
--Why wasn’t Jefferson worried about such conflicts/threats in America’s hemisphere.
--In Jefferson’s second excerpt, what does he advocate regarding “systems” and why?
--Citing evidence from the text, does Adams support Jefferson’s proposal?
--Provide a contextually appropriate meaning of, “be brought to bear against ourselves.”
--Would George Washington have agreed more with Thomas Jefferson or John Quincy Adams and why?
--For what reason does American need to demonstrate strength against Europe?
--Explain an effect of the Monroe Doctrine Metternich foresees in the first half of his second paragraph. Was the fear of that foreseen effect warranted, why or why not?
