Description

This 16 day complete unit covers the American Revolutionary War and the decision to declare independence from England. It covers the political, military and economic history of the war itself, from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the Treaty of Paris, takes a close look at the Declaration of Independence and its author, Thomas Jefferson, and examines the role of and war’s effect on African-Americans, Native Americans, and women. This is a “warts and all” examination of this period of history, as it pulls no punches telling the true human story and cost of the war; it is both a story of triumph and tragedy as well as one of heroes and villains – some of whom were both, depending on how one looks at them.

This unit is based upon and complements my textbook “We Take Nothing by Conquest” and is designed for both the novice and experienced classroom teacher as it contains everything needed for the full course. These materials – all of which have been battle-tested in the crucible of my own 8th grade classroom - include:

*a 71 page Teacher’s Guide which provides day-by-day and step-by-step instructions how to teach the unit and use all of the materials;

*41 pages of informative and interesting text, divided into eight chapters (the complete fifth unit of the textbook);

*an inquiry based study guide for each chapter to focus students on the main points and supporting details;

*quizzes for each chapter;

*PowerPoints with answers to the study guides for review, and including pictures and maps to stimulate discussion and enhance understanding;

*a Cloze activity for one of chapter;

*a fun board game activity for one chapter concerning the impact of the War on African-Americans;

*a primary source document activity examining the Declaration of Independence;

* a primary source activity examining speeches made by and to native tribes concerning their involvement in the war;

*a critical thinking exercise and essay writing project examining whether or not Jefferson was a hypocrite for owning slaves while writing the words “All men are created equal;”

*a Revolutionary War Battle Map project, complete with instructions and a sample map;

*a PowerPoint Quiz Show review game;

*a test prep study guide;

*and two versions of the unit test (one which includes an essay of whether or not Jefferson was a hypocrite, and one which does not).

Answer keys and grading guides for all study guides, activities, quizzes, and project are included in the Teacher’s Guide. Materials are provided as word documents and PDFs in one zip file.
