Description

Students will read 2 articles from the National World War 2 (WW2) Museum and answer 45 questions about the long term and short term causes of Pearl Harbor. They will then complete 5 comprehension/extension tasks (sorting chart, comparing and contrasting significance, and summaries) to demonstrate a further understanding of the material. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub if your students have access to technology!

Sample questions include:
--Why do you think Japan was so intently isolationist?
--Summarize the significance (immediate and long term) of Japan taking control of Port Arthur.
--In what way was the Meiji Restoration a turning point in Japanese history?
--How did Japan increase its colonial possessions after WW1?
--Can the Mukden Incident be considered a turning point in Japanese history, why or why not? What about in World History?
--Write your top 3 takeaways from the introduction.
--What did FDR choose to do in lieu of sending troops to Asia? Explain his intended goal of said choice.
--How were Hitler’s actions in Europe connected to Japan’s expansion into Southeast Asia?
--Describe the two strategies Japan was faced with in late 1940. Why weren’t Japanese military officials in agreement over which to choose?
--How did the effect part of the answer to #19 move Japan and America closer to Pearl Harbor?
--Inferring from the context, what was the strategy of “reconquering the Pacific, island by island” going to be referred to?
