Description

Students will read and analyze 3 points of view of the Compromise of 1850 (John Calhoun, Daniel Webster, and the Free Soil Party) by answering 35 questions and completing an extension task. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--On what grounds does Calhoun believe the country could (presumably) avoid war?
--Why does Calhoun believe some who call for preserving the Union don’t truly mean it?
--In your own words, to what point is Calhoun hoping America reverts to?
--Identify a main point, and signal for the future, from the final paragraph.
--Explain why Webster referred to himself as an American.
--Rewrite the third paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Based on the first three sentences, does this text support or oppose Webster and why? Does it support or oppose Calhoun and why?
--What is Calhoun’s strongest argument against the Compromise of 1850 and why?
--Which of Calhoun’s points does Webster most and least effectively counter and why?
