Description

This digital literacy pack includes paper and paperless activities for parents to complete with their students during this time of distance learning. Distance learning teachers can also assign these digital literacy lessons to their students via Google Classroom, or other Learning Management Systems [Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, or Schoology]. All digital activities are compatible with Google Slides. These literacy activities were created for use with the book, "The Day The Crayons Quit."

Who is this digital literacy pack for?
✍These digital lessons were created with first graders in mind.

What skills will students focus on while enjoying the book?
✍Opinion writing-Students will learn the difference between facts and opinions. They will understand that our opinions need to have reasons to support how we feel or think about a topic. On the paper resource, students will combine their skills of using opinions and reasons with writing a compelling closing to create an opinion writing piece.

✍Fact vs. Opinion Activities-Students will learn the difference between facts [which can be proven] and opinions [how we feel or think]. In a sorting activity, students will distinguish sentences as facts or opinions. In a matching activity, students will match the reasons the Crayons want to leave with each Crayon character. These activities are available digitally and on paper.

✍Comprehension Activities-Students will retell the story using 'somebody,' 'wanted,' 'but,' 'so,' 'then' [SWBST] to guide them in writing about the plot of the story. Additionally, students will read another book of their choice, and use SWBST to retell the story. Students will make text-to-self connections with the character, Duncan, as they compare their crayons to his crayons. To extend their learning, students will read another book of their choice, and make self-to-text connections with the character from that story. These activities are available digitally and on paper. A culminating comprehension quiz is also included. It can be assigned as a Google Quiz or on paper.

✍Word Work Activities-Students will practice ABC order using the crayon color words from the story. For phonics practice, students will use their knowledge of l-blends and r-blends to complete fill-in-the-blank and matching activities. These activities are available digitally and on paper.

What is included in this digital literacy pack?
✍The teacher resource file includes directions for downloading the activities, sharing them digitally, anchor charts, lesson plan menus, and printables to give to families.
PDFs for at home learning and lesson plan menus are also included.
