Description
Students will read a brief background on the chain of events leading to the start of WWI (WW1), Germany's declaration of war on Russia, and a Russian civilian's experience in St. Petersburg when the announcement was made. They will then answer 12 questions (the answers are included) and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Inferring from prior knowledge, in what month and year was this announcement made?
--How does the ambassador explain what the German Emperor’s role has been. How accurate or idealized do you think this part of the text is, and why?
--Why was Russia’s mobilization described as “threatening?” What would have been done to the overall tone and meaning of the declaration if a different word had been used? Give an example of a word that would have changed the tone and meaning of the text.
--Do you think Germany had to declare war against Russia, why or why not?
--How did Russians react to the declaration of war? Why do you think that was their initial response?
