Description
Students will read excerpts from President Johnson's Great Society speech, answer 21 questions (a mix of academic and opinion), and complete 2 creative/extension tasks. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--How will America’s success be demonstrated?
--Explain a connection between the places where the Great Society will be built.
--Summarize the repercussions if the battle against an “ugly America” is lost.
--Why do you think Johnson provided the statistics on how many Americans had not finished certain amounts of school?
--Identify and explain the responsibility Johnson identifies his audience as having.
--Where in the speech is LBJ most presidential and where is he most relatable/human, and why?
--If you were a reporter in 1964, what are 3 questions you would have asked LBJ at the conclusion of this speech?
--Would you consider this in part, in whole, or not at all an extension of JFK’s presidency? Explain your thought process.
