Description

Students will read excerpts from the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and answer 9 questions. They will then read 10 quotes, determine if they support or oppose the act, and answer 6 questions. Next, they will analyze 3 images and 2 maps by answering 5 questions. Lastly, they will complete a map activity with 5 tasks for the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why might the term “ruffians” have been used for those who cast their votes illegally?
--Identify the act referred to in Section 10. Explain its relevance to the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
--Explain what Giddings and Chase may have meant when they referred to the “atrocious plot.”
--Why does Sumner believe compromises will no longer be possible?
--Explain how popular sovereignty can be defended as a democratic compromise, or solution. How can it be considered not as democratic of a solution?
--Does this political cartoon support or oppose the Kansas-Nebraska Act and why?
