Description

Students will read excerpts from the 1959 Kitchen Debate between Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev and analyze it by answering 26 questions and responding to 4 comprehension tasks. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Given the year, what needed to be "improved" in American-Soviet relations?
--Provide a contextually appropriate definition, or synonym, for “bellicose.”
--Why was the exhibit likely to cause interest specifically among Soviet farmers and workers?
--Identify the role, or impact, Nixon sees as a result of this exchange playing out on color tv. Would it have been different in black and white, why or why not?
--Explain what Nixon meant when he said, “extemporaneously and frankly.” Do you think that is positive or negative in this context and why?
--On what grounds does Khrushchev assert that the Soviet Union is a worthy partner to the United States?
--How does Nixon attempt to surpass Khrushchev once they’re in the exhibit?
--How effectively does Khrushchev counter Nixon?
--If you were to give this exchange another name/title what would you choose and why?
