Description

This 15 day complete unit examines the events which led the 13 colonies to engage in open, armed rebellion against their mother country, England. It begins in 1763 at the end of the French and Indian War and culminates with the battles at Lexington and Concord. Students will learn the actions and reactions of the colonies and England, the conflicting economic and political theories between the two sides upon which the dispute was based, and the motivation, both noble and selfish, which fueled the colonists’ actions. This is a “warts and all” examination of this period of history, as it pulls no punches telling the true human story of this decade of rising tension between the colonies and England; it is a story of heroes and villains, pointing out that it not always so easy to tell the two apart.

This unit is based upon and complements my textbook “We Take Nothing by Conquest” and is designed for both the novice and experienced classroom teacher as it contains everything needed for the full course. These materials – all of which have been battle-tested in the crucible of my own 8th grade classroom - include:

*a 60 page Teacher’s Guide which provides day-by-day and step-by-step instructions how to teach the unit and use all of the materials;

*30 pages of informative and interesting text, divided into six chapters (the complete fourth unit of the textbook);

*an inquiry based study guide for each chapter to focus students on the main points and supporting details;

*quizzes for each chapter;

*PowerPoints with answers to the study guides for review, and including pictures and maps to stimulate discussion and enhance understanding;

*Cloze activities for two of the chapters;

*an interactive simulation activity for one chapter concerning mercantilism;

*a Road to Revolution Flow Chart activity to further enhance student learning by helping them organize the chapter information;

*a Road to Revolution Newspaper/Game Board project, complete with instructions, a newspaper writing guide, and a sample newspaper;

*a PowerPoint Quiz Show review game;

* a Road to Revolution board game for use as review;

*a test prep study guide;

Answer keys and grading guides for all study guides, activities, quizzes, and project are included in the Teacher’s Guide. Materials are provided as word documents and PDFs in one zip file.
