Description
This presentation, designed by Shawneen Morrison, includes historic photos of captured slaves in Africa, illegally trafficked slaves following the criminalization of the slave trade (including many children), a slave breeding center, a slave holding site in Africa, slave sale sites used for a variety of sales techniques in the U.S., escaped slaves, fleeing slaves, emancipated slaves and more. Excerpts from Alexander Falconbridge’s journal entitled An Account of the Slave Trade on the Coast of Africa are used to explain some photos and to illustrate how various issues would have been perceived at the time. Dr. Falconbridge was a ship surgeon who was forced to serve on a slave ship to avoid debtor’s prison. He ultimately became a leading abolitionist after witnessing the atrocities of the slave trade firsthand. Seven historic broadsides and illustrations are also included to demonstrate the inadequate legal enforcement of even minimal regulation of the slave trade.
Notes with each slide and suggested discussion points are included. The presentation can also be used independently as powerful support material for your unit on slavery, racism, legal rights, human rights, Triangle Trade, abolition, reconstruction, or the U.S. Civil War. Common Core alignment is included.
