The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan Primary Source Analysis

Students will read and analyze President Jimmy Carter's 1980 speech on the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan by answering 20 questions. They are a mix of academic questions, opinion prompts, and extension tasks. The answers are included where appropriate and this would work for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why was Afghanistan particularly strategic for worldwide peace and stability?
--In what way(s) was SALT II connected to the invasion of Afghanistan?
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym for, “callous.”
--Did your answer to questions 11 add to, or detract from, the overall impact of the speech and why?
--Rewrite the last paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Which part of the speech most reflects the Cold War sentiment of containment and why?
--If you could title this speech, what would you choose and why?
