Description

Looking for an engaging way for students to review physical science concepts? This set of 7 puzzles provides an opportunity for students to enhance their critical thinking skills while exploring potential and kinetic energy, work, and energy transformation. The puzzles are designed to align with the NGSS physical science standards.

NGSS Standard Addressed:

  • MS PS 3-5 Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object.

Puzzles review key vocabulary related to types of energy and transformation of energy. One puzzle also requires students to apply the work formula.

Puzzle Topics:

  1. Spooky Energy Puzzle Students are expected to match definitions of different types of energy. Including chemical, radiant, potential, nuclear, gravitational, elastic, kinetic, sound, electric, mechanical, and thermal. Supports NGSS MS-PS-3-5
  2. Pumpkin Challenge Students will use background knowledge about energy and work and the relationship between force, distance, and work. 12 questions using the work formula to solve.
  3. Monster Hidden Message Students are expected to read and decide if statements are describing potential or kinetic energy. Total of 9 questions. Definitions and statements are written with a lower vocabulary than the Scary Scream Hidden Message Puzzle and this version has fewer questions. Supports NGSS MS-PS-3-5
  4. Scary Screams Message Students are expected to read and decide if statements are describing potential or kinetic energy. A total of 12 questions. This is written at a higher level than the Monster Hidden Message.Supports NGSS MS-PS-3-5
  5. Energy Transformation Puzzle Students are expected to read and decide what object or event best matches the type of energy transformation being described. Supports NGSS MS-PS-3-5
  6. No Bones About It Puzzle Students are expected to read and decide if a transfer or a transformation of energy has occurred.Supports NGSS MS-PS-3-5
  7. What Did You Say? Puzzle Students are expected to determine if the statement is true or false based on the Law of Conservation of Energy. “Energy cannot be created, nor destroyed” Supports NGSS MS-PS-3-5

Usage Recommendations: These worksheets are versatile and can be utilized for independent practice, in stations, as homework assignments, or as part of emergency substitute teacher plans for unexpected schedule changes.
