Description
Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.
Episode 2 of this nine-part series sees the country settle in for a "very bloody affair," and addresses the political infighting that plagued Lincoln's cabinet, the introduction of ironclads as a new means of waging war, and George McClellan's ill-fated Peninsula Campaign. The episode also highlights life in the army camps, recounts the horrors of the Battle of Shiloh, and ends with rumors of Europe's willingness to recognize the Confederacy.
The video guide consists of 26 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.
An answer key is included.
Although the episode is approximately 68 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events during this second year of the Civil War: the Introduction, Politics, Ironclads, The Peninsula, Our Boy, Shiloh, and On to Richmond.
I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
