Word Classifications - 7 Word Searches exploring different word classifications

These word searches have been devised to support the language acquisition of children within 3rd, 4th and 5th grade (Y4, Y5 and Y6 UK) who need to know the classification of:

• verbs
• adverbs
• nouns and proper nouns
• adjectives
• modal verbs
• prepositions
• pronouns
• determiners
• coordinating conjunctions

These word groups are all included within the seven word searches within this resource type. When using them with our children, the words were embedded into the children's understanding of the classifications of each type. It also allowed the children to review their learning from previous terms/years learning and further embed that knowledge further.

Each word search has its own focus of classification, with some word searches having two or three classifications within it. Answers to each word search are provided and are colour coordinated to support either self assessment, group assessment or teacher assessment.

Once printed, your are free to duplicate the word searches for your own class - meaning you have seven Literacy Centres ready to go. In our classrooms, we used them as a warm up activity within our teaching, before applying what the children have been focusing upon within their own writing. Our children loved the challenge of the word searches and were racing one another to see who could finish first. These also make great homework activities to further support learning at home.
