Welcome! This lesson bundle features two acid base worksheets - one where students balance acid base neutralization reactions and the other where students identify which of the listed properties and examples are acids and bases.
In the chemical reaction activity, students will balance the atoms and the polyatomic ions on each side of the yield arrow for each of the ten acid-base neutralization reactions. The directions remind them to balance the metals first, non-metals second, hydrogen third, and oxygen fourth. They then are directed to classify the reactants as acids or bases by writing “A” under the acid and “B” under the base. Additional hints are offered in the directions, reminding students that the formula of acids generally begins with "H", denoting the protons the acids want to release, and that the strongest bases often are metal hydroxides or metal carbonates.
In the classification activity, students will write “A” on the line if the listed property or example is an acid and “B” on the line if it describes a base. There are twenty-six commercial to natural examples and properties listed for students to classify. Then students will wrap up this activity by listing three properties of acids and bases in the bulleted column under the respective appropriate section headers. Students will also list four examples of acids and bases in the bulleted column under the respective section headers.
I assign this activity set in my eighth-grade physical science class. High school physical science and chemistry teachers could also use this lesson set as a remedial reinforcement activity, or as an accommodation to differentiate their curriculum to meet the needs of students who struggle to learn.
This PDF document will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word with an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Program. It includes a key with the answers in red font.
This resource complements the following acid and base-themed activities in my store.
