Description
This lesson, developed by Shawneen Morrison, is designed to increase student awareness of the historical tension over balancing civil liberties with national security and the challenge partisan politics poses to the constitutional system of checks and balances that the founders hoped would curb governmental abuses of power.
The lesson begins with an anonymous opinion survey that sets students up for charges of sedition under the Alien and Sedition Acts.
Students then evaluate each other for indictment under The Acts.
The culminating class discussion, informed by a instructor guide, focuses students on the evolutionary interpretation of the Bill of Rights.
