All About a Million - Bundle (Flash cards, Posters, Number Search, Loop Game, Snap Card Game)

This bundle has been devised to support the teaching of the features and factors of the number 1 million. It has been devised by us to support children understand the size of 1 million and the fractions of numbers that can go into 1 million.

The entire focus of the bundle is ensuring that children know that:

• One million is written in digits as 1,000,000
• Understand half a million is 500,000 and written as five hundred thousand
• Know the quarters of millions, both language and digits
• Know the eighths of millions, both language and digits
• Know the tenths of millions, both language and digits

POSTERS

This can be started by using the display posters to order and sequence the numbers with the children to support place value knowledge and the order of the numbers by viewing all digits in each of the columns. Posters have been designed as both numbers and vocabulary to encourage the children to link the two together and match the two in various warm up activities.

FLASHCARDS

Once the children have met and started to know the sequence of the numbers, as well as words into digits and digits into words (e.g. 100,000 is the same as one hundred thousand, which is the same as 1/10 of one million). The teacher can show the vocabulary flashcard and the children write the number which the vocabulary represents and show the number to the class teacher, or, if shown the number, can the children write the number in words? There are lots of opportunities for the teacher and children to use the flashcards - including pairing the cards in the game of FISH, math stations and so on.

LOOP GAME

The fast and furious game includes 45 cards (meaning every child in the class can play - with some children having more than one card to stretch the more able) with one question and one answer. This activity will embed the children's knowledge of all things "one million". Full instructions for the game are included in the downloadable material and the preview. Our children love Loop Games, and this is no exception. Lots of loops included, huge "million" knowledge used and embedded - the children will love playing this game - and can even use it to play dominoes on their own, in pairs or in a group. Great for a Math Centre.

SNAP!

Using the SNAP! cards, the children play in pairs. One player has a pile of number cards (numbers included are fractions of 1 million), the second player has a pile of the vocabulary cards. Playing SNAP! the children turn cards over one at a time taking turns. When a number matches the vocabulary, the first to shout SNAP! win the pile of cards. This game, like the Loop Game, is fast and exciting. It can be used as a Math Centre activity and embeds the language and number features of one million. We found the children became very fast at visually recognising both features.

NUMBER SEARCH

Exactly like a Word Search, but using numbers. Instead of being given the numbers to find, the children are given a series of clues to solve before finding the answers within the number grid. Included is a worksheet with questions as well as a teacher answer sheet. This activity can be photocopied and used by the whole class, it can be sent home for home learning, or, once again as a math centre.
