Buying a Pet Project Based Math

This Financial Literacy unit is a project-based approach to the new Math 2020 Curriculum. It is meant as a culmination to a unit, or a great activity to use right before a break because the kids are engaged and love to plan it. It does not include lessons. . This is an opportunity for students to use math in real situations. They will estimate then calculate the costs of building the ultimate doghouse, calculate the area, as well as creating posters, writing persuasive letters, and assigning jobs.

 This math project-based learning activity is a perfect way to review before the end of the year or during breaks and get kids excited for spring and summer! The project can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Perfect for distance learning. Topics covered include persuasive writing, art, volume, and community involvement. 

 Not only is this a great way to tie in nature, but it’s also a terrific way to address stress and anxiety concerns in both kids and adults. Since this unit is project-based, answers are not included but this resource includes several rubrics and checklists. When I incorporate project-based learning into my classes, my students are always engaged and excited. I usually pull in some sort of community piece to my learning (like donating food from the garden to a food bank). It really makes kids thrilled to be part of something bigger.
