Using a variety of engaging strategies focused on activating prior knowledge, with a focus on context clues, sets students up within a familiar context of what they currently known.
When: Prior to Lesson Introduction

Why: Prior knowledge helps students focus on not only what is known, but also what is not known as well as what new there is to learn. Teaching strategies to utilize context clues is extremely important as effective strategies help increase vocabulary, comprehension, and further academic success.
How: Teacher task cards with six different activating strategies that focus on context clues. Each strategy has a brief directions. A list of Mentor Texts is also included.
