Product Description

Planning and writing constructed responses can be very challenging for our students.  They are expected to apply background knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities as they analyze text, develop a conclusion/inference, plan and write their responses.

Using the ACED acronym provides students with an effective strategy that can be used as a guide when analyzing text along with planning and writing responses. Even so, students often struggle with identifying the criteria that they should be using for analysis purposes.  This makes explaining how the cited text supports their thinking difficult, if not impossible.

Analyzing the genre of various passages is an excellent starting point for teaching students how to develop criteria.  Genre questions require students to understand and identify the characteristics of various genres. These predefined genre characteristics become the criteria  that they will use to evaluate a story.

Since the criteria that students are using for analysis purposes are predefined when determining the genre of a story, explaining how a story’s elements meets this criteria is less intimidating.  Once they understand how to use criteria to evaluate and analyze text, it becomes easier for them when they need to begin developing their own criteria.
