1.6 Anthropomorphic Stele - 1.7 Jade Cong - 1.10 Tlatilco Female Figurine - Death in Prehistoric Art Escape Room - Google Forms
Grab students' attention with this fun, engaging, and informative escape room focusing on death in prehistoric art! This lesson has everything you need to teach your students about the Anthropomorphic Stele, Jade Cong, and Tlatilco Female Figurine. This escape room features eight stations for students to complete, along with articles and graphic organizers. You may wonder how students can effectively learn about all three artworks in an escape room format. Read below on the lesson sequence to see how learning is reinforced.
Lesson Sequence: To begin, assign students the three short articles to read as homework (pages for students to take notes on the articles are also provided). Then, assign the escape room in class, having students take notes on each station. These notes are designed to force students to wait for each new station before proceeding and serve as the equivalent of "class notes" that students can reference when studying for a test. Finally, after students have escaped, have them work on two graphic organizers to reinforce learning (perfect for early finishers and as a homework assignment).
Escape Room Premise: You have been invited to the exclusive Prehistoric Art Society hosted by the prestigious billionaire Sir Art McArty in his reclusive mansion. Upon entrance to the meeting room, Sir Art McArty hands you a series of articles to be used in conjunction with the first ever meeting. Halfway through the society meeting, Sir Art McArty gets called out to handle something, leaving you and your fellow members alone in his mansion. After finishing the rest of the meeting, you try to leave only to find the doors locked. Looking around, someone spots a mysterious note lying atop the coffee table. You and your team must complete a series of tasks to escape the mansion and find the prize Sir Art McArty has left you.
This escape room features a variety of activities, including a video, a crossword puzzle, multiple-choice questions, and fill-in-the-blank activities, to name a few. What's more, there are positive reinforcement messages throughout! When a student answers a question correctly, a summary recap of the correct answers is provided to reinforce their learning. This lesson takes about one hour to complete.
Have you ever attempted to teach an escape room, only to find the directions confusing? Perhaps you didn't realize how many different stations you had to print, and as a result, you forgot to print a crucial piece of the puzzle that students needed to complete the escape room. I know my teacher friends and I have at one point or another. Let's stop that cycle of confusion with a self-grading Google Form. Students cannot proceed to the next station without first obtaining the correct answer and inputting it into the Google form. This means no station printing for you! (All you need to print are the articles, student notes, and graphic organizers for students to write on and reference as they complete the escape room.)
The information in this escape room relates to the content material in the AP Art History Course and Exam Description for Unit 1: Global Prehistory, 30,000-500 BCE. It is intended to be the only lesson necessary to teach about the Anthropomorphic Stele, Jade Cong, and Tlatilco Female Figurine.
