ELA Standard English - Formal and Informal Language PPT 206 slides

This product uses Powerpoint to introduce students to 103 different informal words and their formal counterparts. We designed this product to support the formal elements of writing within our students fiction and non-fiction writing.

The aim of the product is to show the students an informal word on the slide. The students should then try and work out what the formal counterpart would be. The following slide will add the formal word to the informal so that the students can see the two words together and start to learn how the words fit together.

We found that our students learnt the formal and informal pairs of words and could use both of them within their writing. They activity expanded their vocabulary, and students were happier to be more experimental with their language choices.

We have also included an answer key within the product which can be printed off separately and given to the students for home learning and a reference document for them to use to support their developing written activities. We have called the document a "Vocabulary Improver Checker".

With 206 slides, the activity will keep students busy for a long time, and we used it daily for 10 minutes for approximately three weeks. The students soon started to memorise the answers and, at the same time, started using the vocabulary in both verbal and written activities
