Description

Students will read the text of the 1921 and 1972 Equal Rights Amendment propositions, 6 points of view on the ERA, and they will answer 31 questions (two are about political cartoons). Then they will complete a Janus figure activity to further illustrate the different points of view regarding the ERA. The excerpts are from Shirley Chisholm, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Jerry Falwell, Phyllis Schlafly, Liz Carpenter and John McCreary. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Compare and contrast the 1921 and 1972 versions of the ERA.
--In your own words, what is “outrageous?”
--What are the two most common anti-ERA arguments Chisholm points out?
--Explain what Carpenter could be referring to when she says, “without crippling amendments.”
--Was Reed v. Reed a turning point in the fight for equality, why or why not?
--Explain another way Ginsburg sees the ERA as promoting equality between the genders.
--Identify Shlafly’s core objection to the ERA’s ratification.
--How does Falwell take the ERA beyond politics?
