Description

Students will read excerpts from Frederick Douglass' speech, "What to the Slave is the 4th of July," and respond to 19 comprehension questions and tasks. They will also provide a definition, or contextually appropriate synonym, for 9 words and phrases. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub! 

Sample questions include:
--Inferring from the historical context, explain what contributed to the “considerable distance” Douglass faced?
--Explain the significance of Douglass’ reference to America’s relative youth as a nation.
--For what is Douglass mourning?
--Identify and explain from the historical context how the American slave trade was sustained by American politics.
--Infer and explain what Douglass sees as the long-term consequences for America perpetuating its use of enslaved labor.
--If you were to title this speech, what would you choose and why?
