Description

Students will read and analyze 4 points of view on John Brown (whether he was a hero or villain) and the events at Harpers Ferry by answering 31 questions, completing 2 extension tasks, and analyzing an image. The sources are from a newspaper, Governor Wise, Horace Greeley, and Abraham Lincoln. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--According to the Enquirer, did the events at Harpers Ferry impact sectionalism or nationalism more and why?
--In one word, what does the final statement predict, or forewarn?
--Infer from the first half of the final paragraph what precedent jailing or pardoning Brown could set.
--Write a contextually appropriate definition, or synonym, for pernicious.
--Why doesn’t Greeley believe that Brown should be considered a felon?
--On what grounds would Southerners be charged with slander?
--What is the strongest argument/point made against Brown across the sources and why?
--Which pro-Brown point most effectively counters the anti-Brown arguments and why?
