OVERVIEW
The Duolingo Spanish Podcast series is a great tool to help students increase vocabulary and develop their listening comprehension skills. With fascinating true stories from Latin America, students are inspired by the courage and perseverance of the main characters, who have overcome incredible odds in the face of adversity. In the words of the narrator, "these are not language lessons; they’re life lessons through language."

EPISODE SUMMARY
This activity guide was created to accompany Duolingo Podcast Episode #37: La reina del pelo bueno (The Queen of Good Hair). Spanish speakers are most often thought of as Mestizo, so it is refreshing to gain new perspectives from the very underrepresented Afro Latina. This story introduces the young Cirle Tatis Arzuza, an Afro Latina from the Colombian City of Cartagena. Her unfortunate hair loss due to chemical relaxers forces her to rethink her own concept of beauty and challenge the racist and discriminatory beauty standards of society. Inspired by Angela Davis and the Black is Beautiful Movement from the U.S. Civil Rights Era, she accepts herself and everything that comes with being a black woman, then sets out to help other black women see their own unique beauty, especially in their hair. **Internet access required.**

STUDENT FEEDBACK ON THIS EPISODE
"I loved this podcast! She reminded me of a girl from my favorite show “Siempre Bruja”. Funny thing they are both african american and the show takes place in Cartagena. And I completely agree with her, we do changes to fit in the idea of what beauty is. There's been times where people have gone overboard to fit into society's unrealistic standards. There are a lot of little girls growing up and thinking that there is something wrong with them because they dont look like models on social media and that is not okay."
