OVERVIEW
The Duolingo Spanish Podcast series is a great tool to help students increase vocabulary and develop their listening comprehension skills. With fascinating true stories from Latin America, students are inspired by the courage and perseverance of the main characters, who have overcome incredible odds in the face of adversity. In the words of the narrator, "these are not language lessons; they’re life lessons through language."

EPISODE SUMMARY
This activity guide was created to accompany Duolingo Podcast Episode #42: La rebeldía mariachi (The Rebels of Mariachi). They knew fully well that the road to success would not be an easy one, especially in the male-dominated world of Mariachi music. Yet, in their carcacha (old jalopy), Mireya Ramos and her all-female mariachi band would rev up the engine to hit that road less traveled. Growing up in Puerto Rico, Mireya watched her Mexican father's passionate performances during his mariachi band days and would pick up the sombrero about a decade later. For years, she would be the only woman in a mariachi band, and at times, she felt out of place and unwanted. Like a boss, she decided to create an all-female mariachi band: Flor de Toloache. The ride to the top would be stumped with bumps along the way, but they were soon driving into a new dawn: the rise of the female mariachi. In addition to breaking the barriers of machismo of the mariachi genre, their band would soon come to redefine mariachi music by experimenting with musical genres to create a sound all their own... and that unique sound would take them all the way to the Latin Grammy Awards. **Internet access required.**
