Description

Welcome! This listing features two activities about the respiratory system for a human anatomy and physiology course - a Latin root word (to English) conversion worksheet and a crossword puzzle.

The Latin-Greek root word to English conversion activity reinforces the etymology of seventeen compound medical terms. The words include: nasopharynx, laryngopharynx, oropharynx, epiglottis, bronchus, alveoli, pleural, intrapleural, intercostal, apnea, cyanosis, dyspnea, tachypnea, pneumonia, pleuritis, hypoxemia, emphysema. The header on page one contains a two-column Latin/Greek root word-English conversion word bank.
  • Students first are directed to slash each compound word into its roots.
  • Then students are directed to write the meaning of each root in between forwarding slashes on the first line.
  • Finally, students are directed to write the fluent meaning or definition of the term on the subsequent line. Refer to the example below.
Example: Hypoglycemia
                             ↓ ↓
Student answer: Hypo/glyc/emia ___Deficient / Sugar / Blood___
Definition: Hypoglycemia is a condition of low blood sugar.

This listing includes a complete key with the answers in colored font.

The two-page crossword puzzle about the respiratory system offers twenty-five clues that need to be solved for completion. The crossword puzzle template is on page one, and the clues are on the backside.

Vocabulary terms and topics covered among the clues include, but are not limited to: pharynx, tonsils, lobes (lung anatomy), the effect of fevers on the rate of respiration, the physiology of hiccuping, nasal cavities, alveoli, the physiology behind the loudness and pitch of voice, bronchi, medulla, diaphragm, residual volume, cartilage, visceral pleura, inhalation, larynx, ventilation, chemoreceptors, pulmonary disease, hypothyroidism symptoms, lungs expansion due to intrapulmonic pressure, nasal cavities, septum, intercostal muscle physiology during exhalation, and the directional movement of the thoracic cavity when the intercostal muscles contract. The crossword puzzle also comes with a key.

Both documents will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Program.
