Description

Students will read a brief review of Shays’ Rebellion of 1786-1787 and then will analyze 6 primary source excerpts related to its events and its role in the Constitutional Convention. The sources are excerpts of letters from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson (3), Daniel Shays, and General Lincoln. Students will then answer 30 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. The answers are included and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
—How did Shays’ Rebellion parallel the Revolutionary War patriots’ in thinking and actions from before 1775?
—Describe the relevance of the reference to “Agrarian Laws.”
—Why might Washington have specified that those involved in the uprising were desperate, unprincipled, and young?
—Explain what Jefferson sees as a consequence of “punishing these errors too severely.”
—Rewrite Jefferson’s statement regarding government and newspapers in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
—Under what circumstances would political officials become “wolves?”
—Compare and contrast Jefferson’s November sentiments to those from January. Are they more similar or more different and how/why?
—How does Shays’ Rebellion reflect the strengths and/or weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? With that answer in mind, to what extent did Shays’ Rebellion lead to the ratification of the Constitution?
