Description

Students will delve into the prevailing issue of stereotypes that still surround Native Americans. Students will analyze four political cartoons to identify misconceptions, generalizations and stereotypes of American Indians. The lessons begins with a warm up activity centered on defining stereotypes, how they are formed and if they are harmful. Next, pairs scrutinize four political cartoons from Edgar Wilson Nye, an American humorist from the late 19th century, in which a portion of the cartoon is missing and pairs must hypothesize what is omitted. After the whole cartoon has been revealed, the pairs analyze the cartoons determining the point of view of each cartoons and stereotypes that are apparent. The class debriefs the messages from the cartoons before reading background information about generalizations, myths and stereotypes of Native Americans. Pairs complete reading notes about this background information. Finally, students complete a Sensory Figure that captures the feelings and emotions surrounding Native American stereotypes as well as provide suggestions on how to change the stereotypes about Native Americans that still prevail today.
