Description
Students will read and analyze two points of view on the annexation of Texas (Henry Clay against it and John O'Sullivan for it) by answering 35 questions and completing two extension tasks. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Under what circumstances would he look at annexation differently?
--Explain the meaning of the phrase, “a trifling affair.”
--By what means could, or should, new states and territories be added to the country?
--Identify what Clay believes would be most beneficial political status for Texas going forward.
--Explain why O’Sullivan think this acquisition is inevitable.
--How does O’Sullivan justify his thought process in the fourth paragraph?
--Which part of the text is Clay’s strongest argument against annexation and why?
--Which of Clay’s points does O’Sullivan most and least effectively counter and why?
