In the next phase of the unit, we have defined what civilization is. Now, we will introduce a few of the cultural regions of North America. While discussing these civilizations, I remind the students that their summative project will be creating a website on a civilization of their choosing, hopefully, they can start thinking which one to pick over the next few lessons.
Bellwork: How did geography affect how Native Americans lived? How were the Iroquois affected by their geography? (Refer back to yesterdays Iroquois lesson).
Instruction: Today we are going to compare and contrast the Iroquois ( who we learned about yesterday) and the Algonquian. Read the passage below about the Algonquian culture. While reading, keep in mind what is similar and different between the Algonquian and Iroquois culture.
Exit Ticket: Using what you learned from the reading passages above, complete the Venn diagram below. Remember, if the same phrase can be used to refer to both the Algonquian and Iroquois, it should go in the middle where the circles overlap.
