This is a bundle of 3 amazing stories and lessons from History for Humans that go with these episodes:
1.
Scopes Trial & The Cultural Conflicts of the Roaring Twenties
2.
Capone, Prohibition, & St. Valentine's Massacre
3.
Marget Sanger, the Flappers, & The Birth Control Movement

These episodes teach students through the power of story but also unpack the context so students understand the important historical developments of the time. As students watch they complete their interactive notesheets to comprehend, think critically about, and connect to the history and story. Important terms are defined to help visual learners.

In the Scopes Trial, students learn the amazing Shakespearean drama that was the trial and how it represented so many of the clashing ideas of the times to give a great overview of the decade- fundamentalism vs modernism, city v country, old v new, the rise of the KKK, nativism, and the Red Scare, as well as movies, radio, consumer culture, and of course- the jazz! In episode two, students learn about the effects of prohibition and the rise of Al Capone- how a street thug took advantage of the times to control Chicago with his own reign of terror. But students also get a broad understanding of how average Americans were impacted by prohibition and why it was repealed. Lastly, students learn about the controversial Margret Sanger and her fight to secure birth control for women during the decade while also covering women's changing roles - the flappers, working and domestic women. It also covers her work with the eugenics movement and controversies that have led Planned Parenthood to remove her name from the foundation. It's heavy but approached delicately and allows students to come to their own interpretations of Sanger.

Each lesson also has a quick quiz to ensure understanding and then an extension lesson that lasts about 45-60 minutes. Scopes Trial lesson has students read two case studies about cultural conflicts in the twenties (Palmer Raids and Scopes Trial) and make connections to today's America. The Capone and Prohibition lesson has students analyze political cartoons and then a few short primary sources with scaffolded questions before creating a catchy slogan to repeal the 18th Amendment and one to support prohibition. Lastly, for the Birth Control and Flappers lesson, students compare photos of the Gibson Girl to flappers and answer questions and then read the awesome, "Letter from a Flapper" primary source before answering scaffolded questions.

These stories will definitely leave a lasting impression and get students to remember what made the Twenties roar!
