Description

Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.

Episode 1 of this nine-part series begins with a vivid portrayal of the appalling conditions under which African Americans lived and labored as slaves, and addresses the burning questions of Union versus states' rights, the efforts of abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison and Elijah Lovejoy, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, and the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter. The episode culminates with the Battle of Bull Run and the realization on both sides that this conflict would be long, difficult, and bloody.

The video guide consists of 40 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.

An answer key is included.

Although the episode is nearly 100 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events leading up to the Civil War: the Introduction, All Night Forever, Are We Free?, A House Divided, The Meteor, Secessionitis, 4:30am, April 12, 1861, Manassas, and A Thousand Mile Front. The guide also includes a poignant section titled Honorable Manhood.

I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
