Description
Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.
Episode 3 of this nine-part series recounts the events that led to Lincoln's decision to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Convinced that the old Union could not be restored, that freeing the slaves was both a moral and a military necessity, Lincoln waits for a military victory. In September 1862, on the banks of Antietam Creek, America experiences the bloodiest day in its history. Shortly thereafter, Lincoln issues his proclamation and elevates the war to a higher cause.
The video guide consists of 22 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.
An answer key is included.
Although the episode is approximately 75 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events during the latter months of 1862: the Introduction, Saving the Union, Antietam, and the Higher Object.
I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
