Description
Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.
Episode 6 of this nine-part series begins with a biographical comparison of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, and then recounts the savage battles that pitted the two armies against each other between The Wilderness and Petersburg, Virginia. In one month, the Army of the Potomac lost more men that it had during three previous years of war. The episode then chronicles the ghastly conditions in army hospitals. As the horrifying casualty figures increase and a presidential contest looms, the prospects for Lincoln's re-election appear dim.
The video guide consists of 19 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.
An answer key is included.
Although the episode is approximately 69 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events during the early months of 1864: the Introduction, Grant, Lee, Move by the Left Flank, and Now, Fix Me.
I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
