Description

Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.

Episode 7 of this nine-part series begins with a monumental issue facing both Abraham Lincoln and the Union in 1864: holding a presidential election in the midst of civil war. With Union armies stalled outside both Petersburg and Atlanta, Lincoln's changes for re-election against his former general George B. McClellan appear dim. But 11th-hour victories swing the election in Lincoln's favor -- defeat for the Confederacy becomes a certainty. And in an ironic twist, the Virginia estate belonging to Robert E. Lee is consecrated as Arlington National Cemetery, the country's most hallowed ground.

The video guide consists of 24 questions designed to maintain student engagement help make connections with material presented in class.

An answer key is included.

Although the episode is approximately 71 minutes long, this resource focuses on those sections instrumental to understanding events as the Civil War entered its fourth year: the Introduction, A Warm Place in the Field, The Crater, The Promised Land, Can Those Be Men?, The People's Resolution, and Most Hallowed Ground.

I use this resource in my own class room and know that my students have a deeper understanding of the Civil War and surrounding events because of it. I am sure this video guide will be a valuable addition to your curriculum.
