Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.

Episode 7 of this nine-part series begins with a monumental issue facing both Abraham Lincoln and the Union in 1864: holding a presidential election in the midst of civil war. With Union armies stalled outside both Petersburg and Atlanta, Lincoln's changes for re-election against his former general George B. McClellan appear dim. But 11th-hour victories swing the election in Lincoln's favor -- defeat for the Confederacy becomes a certainty. And in an ironic twist, the Virginia estate belonging to Robert E. Lee is consecrated as Arlington National Cemetery, the country's most hallowed ground.
