Description

Students will read and analyze 4 texts on whether or not America should enter WW1 (World War 1, WWI) by answering 47 questions. The excerpts are from Wilson's "make the world safe for democracy" speech, Robert La Follette's response to Wilson, a few quotes from Jeanette Rankin, and an article from in the North American Review. They will then analyze 5 political cartoons by completing 3 tasks. This can be used as a jigsaw, gallery walk, or learning packet. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Inferring from prior knowledge, what has been swept aside by Germany and why did that bring Wilson back in front of Congress? |
--How could it be said that warfare against commerce was warfare against mankind?
--Why has armed neutrality not been a successful path for America?
--Explain the choice America won’t make.
--Explain the “awakening” he sees in the near future.
--On what grounds does La Follette not support Britain as a key ally?
--How does La Follette use Wilson’s own points to emphasize a lack of support for war?
--Provide a contextually appropriate synonym, or explanation of, “grimmest zest.”
--Summarize the historical context of the Russia taking her place in the sun statement.
--Re-write Rankin’s second statement in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
