Engel v. Vitale Primary Source Analysis

Students will read excerpts from Justice Black's majority opinion on Engel v. Vitale regarding the 1st Amendment and prayer in public school. They will then answer 16 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub! 

Sample questions include:
--Summarize the school district’s point of view on whether the First Amendment was violated or not.
--Describe the “danger” Justice Black referred to from America’s foundation.
--Why was this situation not “freed” from the limitations of the Establishment clause, despite students having the option to remain silent each morning?
--Explain one risk if religion was firmly tied to the government.
--Should this be considered a landmark case, why or why not?
