Description

Students will read and analyze 2 points of view on whether or not Americans have full freedom of speech during World War 1 (WW1, WWI) by answering 35 questions and completing an extension task (the texts are in reference to Abrams v. US). They will also analyze 3 political cartoons according to 5 questions/prompts. If time allows, there are 2 related excerpts with 4 more questions for a resource total of 45. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!  

Sample questions include:
--Why does Holmes feel comfortable saying there was hypocrisy in the government?
--Explain the role of the term, “intent” in this case.
--What purpose does the reference to airplanes/cannons serve? Give another example that would fit in the text. 
--Re-write the 4th paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--On what grounds does Holmes believe the US can hold someone legally accountable for “free speech?" Give a contextually appropriate example to support your answer.
--What from the government does Wigmore’s point about “obscuring the other elements” reflect? Why was it so important to adhere to? 
--For what do Americans need to be vigilant?
--Which text would this best fit in and why? “It will not do to let freedom of speech obscure for us the demands of other elements of liberty and safety.” 
--What is Holmes’ strongest argument for siding with Abrams and why?
--What is Wigmore’s weakest point and why?
--How might a group like the Harlem Hellfighters have responded to Debs’ excerpt? Is there a line in particular they would have especially supported or especially opposed and why?
