Description

Students will read and analyze excerpts from Joseph McCarthy on his reasons for pursuing potential communists in the State Department and the findings of the Tydings Committee and their take on McCarthyism/the Red Scare by answering 30 questions. Students will also complete an extension task and analyze 3 images. The answers are included and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why was it a time of a great armaments race?
--Why do, or should, the statistics in the third paragraph matter to Americans?
--Identify why McCarthy thinks this subversion and these dangers have been able to permeate the State Department.
--How could the American people’s mentality be modified, and to what end?
--Explain what the Tydings Committee establishes in the first paragraph.
--Explain the meaning of the phrase, “hit and run tactics” in this context.
--Which of the Committee’s points is the strongest and why?
--Which of the Committee’s points is the weakest and why?
--What could be added to strengthen that weakest point and why?
--Was the Red Scare and McCarthyism a turning point in US history, why or why not?
