Lesson from Luke 24:13-35

Jesus was resurrected on the first Easter, and the disciples found His empty tomb. Confused and heartbroken, they didn't understand yet that Jesus was the promised Messiah.

After Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene at the tomb, He appeared, disguised, to two disciples walking to Emmaus. As they walked, the two disciples discussed everything they had seen in Jerusalem over the last week. They had hoped that Jesus would be the redeemer of Israel. On their walk, a man joined them and asked them about these things. He then pointed out to these men that Jesus had to suffer to enter God's glory and he pointed out scriptures from Moses and all the prophets to support what he said. Once the men broke bread with this man, they realized that he was Jesus. Their hearts burned within them and they raced back to tell the disciples in Jerusalem.

Kids will apply this lesson by discussing ways they sometimes don't recognize Jesus and praying for discernment when Jesus or the Holy Spirit is prompting them to act in some way.

Activities

Students in this lesson will read Luke 24:13-35 and learn about these men walking to Emmaus. They will answer questions about the passage and then do a fun activity where they will draw a disguise matching the correct body part with the number on a die that they roll.
Students will fill out a picture with word bubbles for the two men on their way to Emmaus.
Students will pretend they were one of the disciples walking with Jesus to Emmaus. They will write a letter to their best friend about the experience.
