Description
Students will read and analyze excerpts from the Dawes Act and a petition in response from Hopi (Moqui) tribal leaders by answering 23 questions. They will also analyze a political cartoon and complete two extension tasks. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Explain the meaning of “improvements” as used in Sec. 2.
--Does Sec. 5 support or oppose your answer to #6 and why?
--In what way(s) does the government try to persuade tribal members to take them up on the terms of this Act? What is an academic word that characterizes the government’s goal?
--Why do the Moqui assert that individual/family land allotments would cause confusion?
--What is the 4th paragraph trying to balance, and is it accomplished, why or why not?
--Citing 3 pieces of evidence from the text, do the military commanders support or oppose the content of this petition and why?
