Description

Students will read and analyze The White Man's Burden by answering 16 questions, analyzing 10 images (7 prompts and tasks provided), and completing a graphic organizer to make connections between the White Man's Burden and religion, economics, imperialism, nationalism, social Darwinism, and racism. The answers are included where appropriate and this would work for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why are the “savages” compared to children? What message does that send to western readers? What message does it send to the Chinese, Filipinos, etc?
--What is the political burden of “White Men” and why?
--Does Kipling seem to imply the road ahead will be easy or hard? Explain your answer.
--Identify the tone, or slant, to the poem. Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.
--Explain in what ways someone from 1899 would share this poem's sentiments, and in what ways someone would disagree with it.
