Description

Students will read and analyze two points of view on whether or not the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 should be passed (George Hoar and James Slater) by answering 34 questions and completing a creative task. They will also analyze 5 images according to provided prompts. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Explain what Hoar meant when he referred to forming and overthrowing governments.
--What do supporters of the act feel threatened by and how does Hoar counter that thought?
--Citing evidence from the historical record, what could support Hoar’s 6th paragraph and what could work against his argument.
--Rewrite the final paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Describe the immigration loophole Slater refers to.
--Was the thought process to #17 accurate, why or why not?
--Explain what Slater sees as the rights that Chinese immigrants do and do not have.
--Why is Slater worried about the amount of Chinese immigrants that are, or will be, in America?
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym, or definition, for “inimical” and “avocations.”
