Description
Students will read excerpts from Marshall's opinion on Gibbons v. Ogden and answer 15 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. They will also define, or provide contextually appropriate synonyms for, 7 terms from the text. A link to a Bill of Rights Institute reference video is included if students need a refresher on the background of the case. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Inferring from prior knowledge and the first paragraph, what was the core issue in this case?
--Explain the meaning of the phrase, “necessary and proper” in this context.
--How does Marshall’s reference to the 10th Amendment fit into this case?
--Explain the impact on the relationship between federal and state governments due to this case.
--Should this be considered a landmark Supreme Court case, why or why not?
