Description

Students will read excerpts from Frederick Jackson Turner's 1893 Frontier Thesis, answer 11 questions, and complete a comprehension task. There are also 6 images for students to analyze and connect to the document. This would be great for a sub and the answers are included where appropriate.

Sample questions include:
--Who, or what, likely was not counted in the census and why? If the census had accurately represented all continental inhabitants, would it have changed the concept or, or location of the frontier, why or why not?
--How had the frontier and Americans affected each other? In what way could it be seen as positive and in what way could it be seen as negative?--Inferring from the historical context and prior knowledge, why were Americans heading out into the frontier?
--Identify Turner’s point of view, or perspective, on America “conquering” the frontier.
--What could be the next period in American history, now that the “frontier has gone?”
